5) Friendly Visits Volunteer Program

Too often isolation becomes the fate of people suffering from ataxia and those close to them. To help break this unruly pattern, we offer a visitor program which gives people with ataxia and their family the support of a caring friend.

Our volunteer visitors are carefully chosen and well trained. They show empathy and provide comfort to people suffering from ataxia. They also assist by supplying a much needed rest to the family and informal caregivers.

This service is intended for people with ataxia who are members of CAFA living in a home or at home, suffering from solitude, their plight, or absence of parents or friends. On a regular basis, once a week or at an agreed upon frequency (an agreement is made between the volunteer and the recipient to the day and the time of the visit), the person with ataxia receives a visit from a volunteer.

People who would like to offer their service as volunteers have to like to talk, have a variety of interests enabling various methods of interaction and have very good listening skills.

CAFA can contribute their part by paying the transportation costs for the volunteer, after an agreement is made and the volunteer has submitted a visit schedule. - Promgram pamplet (PDF) - Form to be filled out by volunteer (DOC)
